Is boutique a 4 letter word?

Posted September 06 2011

In the world of guitar tone, there's an incredible array of opinions on any given subject.  Depending on the audience, some subjects can generate holy wars of rhetoric for this or that point of view.  For many subjects, there are as many points of view as there are options.  For others, the issue is more binanary: either you're for it or against it.  Boutique manufacturers are such a subject.

For some "boutique" means high prices, unremarkable products, snobbish service, etc.  Some that hold this opinion have actual experience to substantiate this opinion.  Others just think of boutique sellers as bourgeois and oppose the idea on general principle.

On the other hand, there are a number of folks that have had terrific experiences.  They have discovered products that are extraordinary rather than ordinary, that are hand crafted one at a time at home rather than mass produced off shore, that are made with the highest quality components rather than the lowest cost components.  They have dealt with companies and their staff where they have a personal, one-on-one relationship, where they are a face and a name, where their business and their relationship is meaningful and is cherished and appreciated.

The dictionary defines boutique as "any small, exclusive business offering customized products or services."  It's this definition and the latter set of experiences that I think of when I use the boutique.  I'm proud to have a boutique business and offer the best products we know how to make and offer the best service we can muster.

If, for you, the word boutique is a four-letter word, I respect your opionion and just want you to know that we're here if you change your mind.  And if you're open to the idea of specialty products and extra-special service, then you're in a good place here at Old Dog Guitar Gear.  We may or may not have a product that fits your needs or budget, but if we do, you have my personal guarantee that we'll do everything we can to make your relastionship with Old Dog one of the best you've ever had.

Best Regards,
